Why doesn’t she smile?
They want to know
She’s trying everything to be bold
Out of her shell standing there afraid
But she fights off her fears as she jumps on that stage
Why doesn’t she smile?
She thinks to herself
Trying to build up her confidence
Move to the music, try to relax
Don’t let them see all that you lack

Laugh the girls in the back
I can sing better, and she’s fat
It’s clear from her view, they disapprove
Laughing and pointing at her every move
Why doesn’t she smile?
The band wants to know
We’re supposed to be putting on a show
Talk to the crowd, play the part
Act like you enjoy sharing your art
Why doesn’t she smile?
It’s clear what they think
As she tries harder and harder
Sending her nerves to the brink
As men start taunting her from the edge of the stage
Why doesn’t she smile?
It’s the end of the show
Steps off the stage, defeated and low
Fans come to greet her and tell her she’s great
By the way, you should smile more while you’re up on the stage
